In all, 122 teams from the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball were ranked in order, based on a weighted average of scores in eight different categories ranging from the quantitative to the emotionally subjective: “bang for the buck” (24.3%), players (16.6%), fan relations (16.5%), affordability (14.1%), stadium experience (9.1%), ownership (9.0%), title track (6.7%), and coaching (3.9%).

If they gave awards for most improved franchise, the Lightning would be busy writing a thank you speech. After jumping 86 spots in our Standings, the lion's share of credit could be shared by any number of contributors: brilliant performances from Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis (Players: plus-100); the rookie GM/coach combo of Steve Yzerman and Gary Boucher (Coaching: plus-62); new owner Jeff Vinik and the fine-tooth comb he ran through the organization (Ownership: plus-28). But in a year when nearly everything on the ice seemed to go right, the Bolts didn't forget the little things off the ice. They started by freezing season ticket prices, and continued to offer the cheapest beer ($5), hot dog ($2) and average premium ticket ($56.29) in the league. No-brainer, then, that Tampa Bay was the NHL's biggest Bang for the Buck. The home rink finally became more frenzy than Forum again (attendance increased 9 percent), and the players responded by not getting shut out at St. Pete during the regular season. Although the dream season ended with Game 7 heartbreak, the Bolt's grit (even a puck to the face couldn't sideline Stamkos) was not lost on a thankful fan base."
